Whether it’s a toothache, a broken tooth, or a knocked-out tooth, it’s essential to seek prompt dental care to avoid further complications. Toothaches, broken or chipped teeth, knocked out teeth, and abscessed teeth are some of the most common dental emergencies that can occur. If left untreated, these conditions can become even more problematic, so it is important to seek prompt dental care as soon as possible.
Common Causes of Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly and cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. Understanding the potential causes and knowing what to do in these situations can help prevent further damage and improve the chances of successful treatment.
Toothache
A toothache can be caused by a variety of issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, or a cracked tooth. It’s important to seek dental care right away if you have a toothache to determine the underlying cause and prevent further damage.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
A broken or chipped tooth can be caused by trauma, such as a fall or accident, or by biting down on something hard. Depending on the severity of the break, your dentist may be able to repair the tooth with a filling or crown.
Knocked Out Tooth
If you have a knocked-out tooth, it’s important to seek dental care immediately. If you can find the tooth, rinse it off gently and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in a container of milk and bring it with you to your dental appointment.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

For Toothaches
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help alleviate pain and swelling. To prevent any potential harm to the gum tissue, it is advisable to avoid applying aspirin or other pain relievers directly to the affected area. Rather, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever and applying a cold compress to the affected region to alleviate any swelling.
For Broken or Chipped Teeth
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help clean the area and reduce the risk of infection. If you’re experiencing any pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever and apply a cold compress to the affected area. If you can find the broken piece, place it in a container of milk and bring it with you to your dental appointment.
For Knocked-Out Teeth
If possible, rinse the tooth gently and try to reinsert it into the socket. Be sure to hold it by the crown and not the root. If reinserting the tooth is not possible, place it in a container of milk or your saliva and bring it with you to your dental appointment.
For Abscessed Teeth
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help relieve pain and swelling. Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. It’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of your body.
